MERLINO Giovanni

Giovanni Merlino is Associate Professor in Information Processing Systems (Group of Academic Recruitment Fields 09/H - Computer Engineering) at the Engineering Department of the University of Messina.

He holds an international PhD in Computer and Telecommunications Engineering at the University of Catania, and has earned eligibility to the role of Full Professor in the Italian Academic Recruitment Fields 09/H1 (Academic discipline: ING-INF/05, Information Processing Systems) and 01/B1 (Academic discipline: INF/01, Informatics), according to the National Scientific Qualification system (ASN 2021-2023, ASN 2023-2025, respectively).

His main research interests currently include: Internet of Things for Industry 4.0, Fog Computing and the Web of Smart Things, in support to biomedical applications based on Deep Learning techniques, and cyber-physical systems modeled as agentic and software-defined infrastructure, especially in terms of hybrid IT/OT convergence and decentralization protocols.

He is co-author of over 100 papers in international journals and conference proceedings.

He is member of Program Committees and Organizing Committees in several international conferences, and of the Editorial Board for "Computer Communications" (Elsevier), "Access" (IEEE), and "IoT" (MDPI) journals.

He has contributed to several international (EU FP7, H2020) and national (NRRP) projects.

In 2017 he has co-founded the innovative startup, smartme.IO, an academic spin-off.
He is co-inventor and holder of a patent in the smart home domain.

​He is member of IEEE and ACM.

He has been elected National Secretary of the italian Association of Fixed-Term Researchers (ARTeD) in 2022, a role held until his permanent appointment (academic tenure) in 2023. He has been appointed Secretary Emeritus of ARTeD in 2024.

Since 2025 he has been an Associate Member of the "Accademia Peloritana dei Pericolanti".
