SAMOTHRACE - SiciliAn MicronanOTecH Research And innovation Center - Work Package 6 - Cultural Heritage

Group
Work Package 6 – Cultural Heritage is one of the six research groups (WP 1-6) headed by the University of Messina within the Samothrace Ecosystem, funded by PNRR funds and focused on the development of micro- and nanotechnologies applied to different fields, including diagnostics and monitoring of cultural heritage. Work Package 6 is characterized by a robust interdisciplinary structure and integrates skills from both the humanities and “hard sciences”. It is divided into two subgroups (Task 1 and 2), of which the first, composed of archaeologists, chemists and physicists, deals with the identification and analysis of degradation factors and diagnostics; the second, composed of archaeologists, engineers and architects, is engaged in the development of applications in the laboratory and in the field. In the initial phases of the project, the two subgroups identified the archaeological site of Tindari (ME) as the main case study, within which research activities are carried out both outdoors, in the ancient theatre, and indoors, inside the Antiquarium and in the site's deposits.

Overview

The research is based on the selection of a series of diversified case studies, chosen to represent the variability of cultural heritage artefacts and their respective conservation contexts. This selection is aimed at analyzing materials subjected to different environmental conditions and stresses, providing a representative picture of the issues related to in situ conservation. For each case, a systematic assessment of the state of conservation of the materials is conducted, through integrated diagnostic methodologies, with the aim of identifying the main degradation phenomena in progress. In parallel, analytical protocols for site-specific environmental monitoring are developed, applicable both in internal and external subaerial environments, and calibrated based on the specificities of the materials and contexts examined. The integration between diagnostic data and those deriving from environmental monitoring is achieved through the application of chemometric techniques. Multivariate analysis allows to explore and quantify the relationships between the monitored environmental variables and the observed alteration processes, with the aim of clarifying the role of environmental factors in the degradation mechanisms and in the conservation processes of the materials.
