Prof. Filippo Giarratana was born in Ciriè (TO) the 26th October 1978 and he graduated at Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Messina, on 04th November 2004, discussing the Thesis titled “Colour assessment of tuna muscle employed in canning industry”
In 2007 he obtained the title of PhD in "Health of the marine environment, fish pathology and sanitary quality of fish" (XX Cycle at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Messina), discussing a doctoral thesis entitled: "Interference of Specific Spoilage Organism (SSO) on the in vitro growth dynamics of Aeromonas hydrophila".
From 2008 to 2011 he attended the School of Specialization in “Inspection of Foods of Animal Origin”, at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of Turin, based in Moretta (CN), obtaining the title of "Specialist in Inspection of food of animal origin".
From 2009 to 2013 he had a "Research Fellow” entitled: "Characterization of the hazard in off-shore aquaculture products in view of the obligations set out in Regulation 852/2004 for primary production".
From 2014 to 2018 he was a "Junior" Researcher for the Disciplinary Scientific Sector VET/04- Inspection of Food of Animal Origin.
In July 2017 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the functions of Professor II (Associate) Call for D.D. 1532/2016 for SC 07/H2 – SSD VET/04 from 20/07/2017 to 20/07/2023.
From 11th December 2018 to 11th December 2021, he has been a “Senior” Researcher for the Disciplinary Scientific Sector VET/04- Inspection of Foods of Animal Origin at the Department of Veterinary Sciences, University of Messina.
In November 2020 he obtained the National Scientific Qualification for the functions of Full Professor - Call for D.D. 2175/2018 for SC 07/H2 - SSD VET/04 from 19/11/2020 to 19/11/2029.
From 11th December 2021 he is Associate Professor for the SSD VET/04 “Inspection of Food of Animal Origin” at the Department of Veterinary Sciences, University of Messina.

National teaching activity:
In the Degree in Veterinary Medicine (LM42) since 2014 he has been and is teacher of the following disciplines, "Internship VET/04 - Official Audit", "Internship VET/04 - Official control of the food industry 1" and "Internship VET/04 - Official control of the food industry 2".
In the degree course in “Animal Production Technology and Safety Sciences” (L-38), since 2018 he is teacher for the discipline "Inspection methodologies of food production of animal origin".
Since 2015 he is member of the Doctoral School Committee of the Doctoral School of Research in Veterinary Sciences.
In the School of Specialization in "Inspection of Foods of Animal Origin" of the University of Messina since 2018 he is the teacher of "Organization and strategy in the health control of food of animal origin"; since 2019 of “Laboratory techniques for the certification of foods of animal origin” and since 2022 of “Inspection of processed meat”.

International didactic activity:
In 2018 he was “Academic supervisor” of the Erasmus + KA107 scholarship for Dr. ABDELAZIZ ED-DRA between University of Messina and University Moulay Ismail, Faculty of Sciences, Meknes and “Co-director” of the Doctoral thesis of Dr. Sonia Arab, Master Assistant in Veterinary Science at Blida University 1 (Algeria) entitled "Contribution à l'étude de la recherche des espèces de Vibrio potentiellement pathogènes chez les produits de la mer en Algérieat".
In 2019 and 2020 he was “Academic supervisor” of the Erasmus Program for Dr. Mustapha AAZZA between University of Messina -Italy and University Moulay Ismail, Faculty of Sciences, Meknes - Morocco, and “Tutor” of Dr. Fliou Jamila (PhD student at the Moulay Ismail University of Meknes-Morocco) relating to the scholarship issued by the "Italian Embassy in Rabat" and managed by the "Directorate-General for the Promotion of the Country System - Office VII- Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation- Rome" in relation to the research on the "Biological activity of the extracts of the plant Daphne gnidium L.".
In 2021 he was “Academic supervisor” of the “Agreement” between the University of Messina - Italy and the Faculté des Science des Tunis – Université de Tunis El Manar for the Dr. Nermine Nefzi (Ph.D. students).
In 2023 he is “Academic supervisor” of the Erasmus Program for Dr. Elaaraj Ibtissam between University of Messina - Italy and the University Moulay Ismail, Faculty of Sciences, Meknes – Morocco, and of the “Agreement” between the University of Messina - Italy and the Faculté des Science des Tunis – Université de Tunis El Manar for the Dr. Nermine Nefzi (Ph.D. students).

The principal research objects regard: i) the seafood product quality and safety with particular regard to the presence of parasites, foodborne disease or spoilage agents and chemical pesticides; concerning this field, in the last decade, the safety of aquaculture product was particularly stressed; ii) the correlations between animal health and welfare and meat hygiene at the slaughter; iii) the application of innovative techniques in order to plan the HACCP system in food industries; iv) the application of microbial challenge tests and predictive microbiology to Quantitative Risk Assessment, with particular regard to seafood products; v) evaluation on the presence of microplastic in food of animal origin.

Other assignments and activities:
Since 2019 he is Editor in Chief for the international scientific journal “Integrative Journal of Veterinary Biosciences” (ISSN: 2577-4492).
From 2020 he has been selected by several international scientific journals as Guest Editor for several special issues related to food safety and quality.
He is member of the editorial board of 15 international scientific journals, including the prestigious "PLOS one".
Since 2016 he is a founding partner of the company “Riconnexia srls”, Spin-off of the University of Messina.
