CARES

Group

Overview

The CARES research group aims to apply complementary skills in the fields of philosophical, bioethical, legal, and clinical research on the health of people and the environment. This is based on understanding the true human condition, which is that of a being deeply rooted in an ecosystem, whose balance directly affects its health, quality of life, and even survival. The group was formed to explore the close relationship between human health, including mental health, and ecosystem well-being, especially in light of the current heated discussion about the direct connection between pandemics, pollution, and biodiversity loss. It is now a proven scientific fact that environmental damage must be curtailed to safeguard human quality of life. Our ecosystem is in poor health, and immediate action is required to restore its balance. Moreover, today, humans face another significant challenge posed by the advent of one of their most recent inventions: digital technology, which opens a new chapter in human history by creating new existential conditions. AI no longer serves as just a simple tool but designs environments and builds relational spaces. As the digital environment has become all-encompassing—a context from which we can no longer withdraw—we must learn to actively inhabit it through ethically guided behaviors aimed at preserving our true identity and mental health. An additional area of analysis involves the current digital ecosystem in which humanity is inevitably immersed. For example, this includes investigating the influence of AI technologies in the medical field, which are increasingly widespread across various sectors of research and practical application, where there are significant ethical issues, such as the implications of the relationship between law and health innovation regarding the emergence of "new vulnerabilities." It is certainly true that AI use can optimize healthcare, provided that we learn to avoid predictable issues related to the concept of machine medicine rather than medicine with machines. In this context, there is a clear possibility of risks emerging related to security, privacy, equitable data usage, and also in terms of responsibilities. Ultimately, the researchers intend to explore possible conditions for human well-being by considering the new scenarios that are unfolding due to the unstoppable acceleration of technoscientific development. It is clear that today the human ecosystem is no longer solely natural but also digital. Humanity, becoming increasingly aware of its evolution and the evolution of the world, must commit to rethinking our ways of inhabiting new environments, which host different forms of existence and behavior, even those developed by synthetic and hybrid artifacts resistant to traditional classification. Our task is, therefore, to build an ethos capable of reconciling the natural and the artificial: we must position ourselves in a digital environmentalism that considers all types of interaction emerging from the new context as deserving of care. The research, particularly focused on the clinical, ethical, and legal aspects of various issues, in an interdisciplinary and global perspective, will be conducted with specific attention to different regulatory contexts, considered in a comparative perspective.
