Research activity
The research activity is mainly focused on experimental studies and technological applications in the field of solid state physics. In particular, it is aimed at the use of deposition techniques for the production of thin films, synthesis of nanostructured materials and their spectroscopic characterization. Co-author of over 190 publications in international scientific journals and about 120 communications at national and international conferences.

Research interests:
- Synthesis by laser ablation of nanostructured materials in the colloidal phase and in the form of thin films;
- Diagnosis by optical spectroscopy of plasmas generated during laser ablation
- Diagnostics of thin films and nanostructures by using vibrational spectroscopy techniques (multiline micro-Raman, micro-IR and optical absorption) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
- Morphological characterization of nanostructured materials with scanning electron microscopy (SEM, STEM) and microanalysis.

Responsible for the development line of a modular micro- Raman setup and of non-linear optical (z-scan technique) optical bench, and of a setup for the analysis of IOL optical aberration (in collaboration with SIFI S.p.A.)
Head of Research Laboratories
As part of the research activities, Prof. Enza Fazio holds the role of Head of the following research laboratories at the MIFT Department of the University of Messina:
- Laboratory of MNS optical spectroscopy
- Laboratory of Nonlinear Optical
He deals with the management and planning of the activities of the Microanalysis Laboratory (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy & Imaging, SEM electron microscopy, STEM and microanalysis) and of the Nanomaterials Laboratory (Laser Ablation in LAL Liquids for the synthesis of metallic and dielectric nanoaggregates) as well as of spraying techniques (i.e. electrospinning).
She is entrusted with the direction and coordination of the research activities carried out in the aforementioned laboratories, also following collaborations established with various research groups of the University, research institutions and foreign universities, by other research structures (for example CNR- IPCF Messina section, CNR-IMM Catania section) or from the manufacturing world (ST-Microelectronics srl).

From 04/29/2019 to today As recognition for her scientific activity, since April 2019 Prof. Enza Fazio has been the Italian Representative for the three-year period 2019-2022 and for the three-year period 2022-2025 in "IUVSTA (The International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications)" - in the division: "Surface Engineering" (http://iuvsta.org/about-iuvsta/).

2021 today: As INVENTOR, Patent for industrial invention Application number: 102021000024185 entitled: "Innovative biotechnological systems for the detection of cellular or molecular analytes". Applicants: UNIME-UNIBO. (Prot. no. 0113471 of 09/22/2021 Ministry of Economic Development). The present invention concerns a process for the detection of cellular or molecular analytes that uses two types of engineered phages: a capture phage (“bait phage”) and a signal phage (“reporter phage”). Through this process it is possible to selectively bind a target analyte and therefore recognize said target analyte. Patent extension in China in 2024.
