21/7/1993 Scientific High School Diploma - Capo d'Orlando State Scientific High School (ME).
10/3/1999 Degree in Physics (109/110) University of Messina, experimental research thesis entitled: "Film of hydrogenated microcrystalline silicon".
14/02/2003 PhD in Physics (XV cycle) at the University of Messina discussing an experimental research thesis entitled: "Influence of the introduction of nitrogen in thin films of silicon-carbon alloys".
06/07/2007 Title of specialist in technology transfer and innovation issued by the Politecnico di Milano and by Area Science Park of Trieste. Drafting of a project work on "Pleasure boating and shipbuilding in the province of Messina": market analysis, organization of local entrepreneurial realities in the nautical sector, detection and classification, by thematic areas, of scientific research aimed at technological applications available at research centers.
08/04/2013 PhD title in Advanced Technologies for Optoelectronics and Photonics and Electromagnetic Modeling (XXV cycle) at the University of Messina discussing an experimental research thesis entitled: “Advanced Optical Spectroscopic Techniques for the study of nanomaterials”.

Research activity

The research activity is mainly focused on experimental studies and technological applications in the field of solid state physics. In particular, it is aimed at the use of deposition techniques for the production of thin films, synthesis of nanostructured materials and their spectroscopic characterization. Co-author of over 190 publications in international scientific journals and about 120 communications at national and international conferences.

Research interests:
- Synthesis by laser ablation of nanostructured materials in the colloidal phase and in the form of thin films;
- Diagnosis by optical spectroscopy of plasmas generated during laser ablation
- Diagnostics of thin films and nanostructures by using vibrational spectroscopy techniques (multiline micro-Raman, micro-IR and optical absorption) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS).
- Morphological characterization of nanostructured materials with scanning electron microscopy (SEM, STEM) and microanalysis.
- Biomedical applications using Raman spectroscopy
- Analysis of the nonlinear optical response using the z-scan technique
- Analysis of failure mechanisms of microelectronic devices
Responsible for the development line of a modular micro- Raman setup and of non-linear optical (z-scan technique) optical bench, and of a setup for the analysis of IOL optical aberration (in collaboration with SIFI S.p.A.)

Head of Research Laboratories

As part of the research activities, Prof. Enza Fazio holds the role of Head of the following research laboratories at the MIFT Department of the University of Messina:
- Laboratory of MNS optical spectroscopy
- Laboratory of Nonlinear Optical
He deals with the management and planning of the activities of the Microanalysis Laboratory (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy & Imaging, SEM electron microscopy, STEM and microanalysis) and of the Nanomaterials Laboratory (Laser Ablation in LAL Liquids for the synthesis of metallic and dielectric nanoaggregates) as well as of spraying techniques (i.e. electrospinning).
She is entrusted with the direction and coordination of the research activities carried out in the aforementioned laboratories, also following collaborations established with various research groups of the University, research institutions and foreign universities, by other research structures (for example CNR- IPCF Messina section, CNR-IMM Catania section) or from the manufacturing world (ST-Microelectronics srl).

Responsible for research activities:

2002 Young Researchers Project entitled: “Structural, optical and electronic properties of a-SiC thin films doping with nitrogen”, University of Messina
2004 Young Researchers Project (PRA 2004). Responsible of the research program: “Structural and optical properties of SiOx thin films with silicon nanocrystalline inclusions”, University of Messina
2013 Scientific responsible within the HIPPOCRATES project of the activities: "Development of Micro and Nano-technologies for the Men's Health" - Sicily Micro and Nano Technology Cluster Systems SCARL-Research line: Drug & Delivery.
2011-today: Tutor of several students (in the Degree Course in Physics and PhD), tutor of PhD students and research grant holders, member of various commissions for the selection of scholarship holders and technical personnel at the University of Messina
2008-present Referee of international scientific journals.
From 2023 to today: Member of the Scientific Council of the District Micro and Nano Sistemi s.c.a.r.l. for the three-year period 2023-2025.

Awards and recognitions:

10/13/2008 Young Researchers Award assigned by the University of Messina for the scientific production of 2005 for the Scientific-Technological Macro Area.
08/10/2008 third place in the first edition of the "Award for Innovation Start Cup of the Strait 2007/2008- Competition between business ideas generated by university research", organized by the University of Messina with the business idea called SDN . (R&ST entrepreneurial project entitled: "Electrospraying systems of inorganic nanomaterials on solid surfaces of various nature and industrial interest".
From 04/29/2019 to today As recognition for her scientific activity, since April 2019 Prof. Enza Fazio has been the Italian Representative for the three-year period 2019-2022 and for the three-year period 2022-2025 in "IUVSTA (The International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications)" - in the division: "Surface Engineering" (http://iuvsta.org/about-iuvsta/).
Year 2024: Fazio Enza is in the top 2% of the best researchers in the world (as per the analysis of Stanford University which, based on the data provided by Elsevier (Scopus), published the list and ranking of the world's top 2% of the best scientists in all research fields.

Management and coordination of research activities

Year 2003 Responsible of the research project "Young Researchers" (Area 02) entitled: "Structural, optical and electronic properties of nitrogen-doped a-SiC films", funded by the University of Messina.
PRA 2004 Responsible for the research project PRA2004 Young Researchers Projects entitled: "Structural and optical properties of SiOx thin films containing silicon nanocrystalline inclusions", funded by the University of Messina.
2012-2015 Scientific manager of the activities of the Drug & Delivery Research line - OR 3 within the HIPPOCRATES project "Development of innovative Micro and Nano-technologies for human health", PON02_00355_2964193.
From 2013 to 2022 Management and coordination, in the capacity of scientific manager, of the Research group that develops the activities envisaged in research projects concerning: "Synthesis of nanostructured biosensor systems and molecular diagnostics using optical spectroscopy techniques" funded by the Pro Bambini Association and Leukemic Adults (ABAL) ONLUS
From Jan 2017 to today Task Manager (for the partner University of Messina) of the project H2020- WInSiC4AP (737483).-Type of action: ECSEL-RIA, Topic: ECSEL-2016-1- Call: H2020-ECSEL-2016-1 -RIA-two-stage).
From Jan 2019 to today Local Scientific Responsible (Contact Person) of the project proposal entitled: "Highly efficient and trustworthy components and systems for the next generation energy supply infrastructure of e-mobility" (Progressus), within the H2020-ECSEL-2019-2-RIA. Topic: ECSEL-2019-2-RIA- Type of action: ECSEL-RIA- Proposal number: 876868-2.
From 2020 to 2024: Contact person (DTSMNS-UNIME) for the research activities envisaged in Task 5.3 - Analysis of materials and device characterization (Cluster2 and Cluster3) - WP5 - of the GaN4AP project - GaN for Advanced Power Applications (Proposal: 101007310- 2) within the Call: H2020-ECSEL-2020-1-IA-two-stage. This project was admitted for financing on 10.12.2020 (JU Information Letter Ref.: D/2020/100429).
October 2022-today: Member of the research unit at the University of Messina of the MetacMed project (HORIZON-MSCA-2022-DN-01-01; Doctoral Networks (DN) - MARIE SKŁODOWSKA-CURIE ACTIONS).

Patent ownership

2021 today: As INVENTOR, Patent for industrial invention Application number: 102021000024185 entitled: "Innovative biotechnological systems for the detection of cellular or molecular analytes". Applicants: UNIME-UNIBO. (Prot. no. 0113471 of 09/22/2021 Ministry of Economic Development). The present invention concerns a process for the detection of cellular or molecular analytes that uses two types of engineered phages: a capture phage (“bait phage”) and a signal phage (“reporter phage”). Through this process it is possible to selectively bind a target analyte and therefore recognize said target analyte. Patent extension in China in 2024.
