Professor Giuseppa Genovese graduated in Biological Sciences in 1992 defending a thesis about "Formation and release of conchospore in Porphyra leucosticta Thuret (Rhodophyta, Bangiophyceae)". From 1988 to 1991 she attended the Phycological Lab of the University of Messina as undergraduate student at Institute of Botany of University of Messina.
In 1992-93 she did an apprenticeship as biologist at the Department of Organic and Biological Chemistry and the Department of Botany of the University of Messina to take the State exame.
In 1992 she did a training period on cultivation of marine algae in the Phycological Lab of professor M. Guiry at the National University of Ireland in Galway.
In 1995 she had the position of researcher (E01A) at the Institute of Botany of the University of Messina.
In 1996 she attended the course on Immunocytochemical carried out by professor Cimini at the University of Naples.
In 2014 she had the Italian National Scientific Qualification to associate professor in General Botany (05/A1) and from 2017 she had the position of associate professor in General Botany (SSD BIO/01) in the University of Messina.
In May 2021 she had Italian National Scientific Qualification to full professor in Botany (SC 05/A1 – BIO/01) and in 2022 she takes the position in the University of Messina.
Prof. Genovese has been a member of the Commissions for Comparative Evaluations for Researcher positions and for admission to PhD courses.
She is peer reviewer for several international journals.
She regularly participates in national and international congresses on topics related to Phycology.
Since 2009, Prof. Genovese has been in charge of the Laboratory of Phycology of the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and then of the Laboratory of Applied Phycology of the ChiBioFarAm Department.
She has been a member of the technical, scientific and management committee of the "Pietro Castelli" Botanical Garden since 2018.
She is a member of the Interuniversity Consortium for Marine Sciences (Co.N.I.S.Ma.) since 1995.
She is referee for MIUR- REPRISE
Prof. Genovese has done a continuative research activity on evolution, taxonomy, molecular phylogenetics, reproduction, life history, cultivation and karyology of algae with particular attention to economic species. She has been interested in some aspects of applied physiology aimed at exploring the biological activity of extracts from macroalgae. She was particularly dedicated to exploring the potential activities of a red alga (genus Asparagopsis) rich in bromorganic molecules which revealed (first report) a high antiprotozoal potential (against Leishmania sp.) and antifungal (against Cryptococcus neoformans/C. gattii complex e Aspergillus sp.) in vitro. The research of Prof. Genovese has been directed also towards the evaluation of the potential antimicrobial activity in vitro of algal extracts against fish-pathogenic bacteria relevant in aquaculture (Aeromonas salmonicida and Photobacterium damselae), opportunistic pathogenic fungal species (Aspergillus sp., Vibrio ssp., Cryptococcus ssp., Salmonella sp.) Parasites of global importance such as those of the genera Leishmania and Plasmodium. In addition, some structural algal polysaccharides were tested on the blood of some mammals (horses, dogs) to evaluate their potential anticoagulant activity. Recent research has concerned the identification of ficocolloids aimed at slowing the formation of microbial biofilms on different substrates and the development of green methods for extracting polysaccharides of commercial interest from algal biomass.
Prof. Genovese has been involved in monitoring the biodiversity of macroalgal flora with the aid of molecular phylogeny and DNA barcoding methods with particular interest in the cryptic diversity between green and red algae species, contributing to providing diagnostic tools for taxonomic recognition and for the identification of the introduction routes of non-native species.
Prof. Genovese also cooperated in the selection of algal species as sources of chlorophyll c for the construction of photovoltaic cells of the DSSC type (Dye Sensitized Solar Cells) and the evaluation of their energy efficiency. In recent years it has been involved in a new project which concerns the use of algal biomass to be subjected to hydrothermal carbonization (HTC) in order to obtain carbon skeletons and liquid fractions for future uses. The liquid fraction of HTC (AHL solution) was the subject of a study which has demonstrated that its use in agriculture is possible to improve plant performance by increasing the speed of photosynthesis and, consequently, the biomass of plants shoots and/or roots.
At the same time, considering that hydrochar already has applications in the adsorption of polluting drugs, the use of that produced from algal biomass has been proposed to retain heavy metals in the environment or to remove pollutants from the plant growth medium (soil and/or or hydroponic solutions).
Furthermore, Prof. Genovese is collaborating on the development of optical systems for detecting plant health.
This research is the subject of articles printed or currently being published in journals of international importance which were conducted by collaborating in various capacities on different research projects with numerous Italian and foreign universities or research centres. Prof. Genovese regularly participates in international and national conferences in the sector.
