Description

Lorenzo Campagna is Full Professor of Classical Archaeology (SSD ARCH-01/D) at the Department of Ancient and Modern Civilizations at the University of Messina, where he teaches Roman Archaeology and Art History. Since 2021, he has served as Coordinator of the First Level Degree in "Archaeological Heritage: Territory, Settlements, Material Culture" at the university's branch campus in Noto.
His main research interests focus on the Hellenistic and Roman periods, with particular attention to urban planning, architecture, and architectural decoration. He has taken part in numerous excavations at various sites across Sicily, including Agrigento, Heraclea Minoa, Gela, Morgantina, Segesta, and Lipari. He is currently the scientific director of research projects on the ancient city of Tauromenion (modern-day Taormina), where he has led excavations at the Villa San Pancrazio since 2015. Since 2016, he has also been co-director of the Archaeological Mission of the Universities of Messina and Oxford at the site of Halaesa (Tusa, Sicily).
Since 1992, he has participated in the archaeological activities of the Italian Mission at Hierapolis in Phrygia (Turkey), where he was responsible for the excavations and study of the Nymphaeum of the Tritons and is currently engaged in research on the Nymphaeum of the Sanctuary of Apollo.
Since 2014, he has been a member of the Italian-Greek archaeological mission at Skotoussa, Thessaly, and since 2022, he has served as its scientific director on behalf of the University of Messina.
He is the author of over 90 publications, including two monographs and numerous articles in top-tier journals. He has been an invited speaker at numerous conferences and seminars in the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Turkey, Greece, Brazil, and several cities across Italy.
