U-Eculture. Towards the European Digital Ecosystem of Culture

Group
The U-Eculture project (Horizon CL2-2022-HERITAGE-01-07 project) is an integrated research project, in which partners with excellent skills work in the field of cultural heritage. The aim is to build a new holistic vision of safeguarding and enhancing Europe's cultural heritage in which technologies, models and tools are properly designed for cultural heritage and not adapted to it, as is currently the case. The aim is to create a European area for cultural heritage and a digital ecosystem where each stakeholder can add cultural data with different levels of representation. An Open Source system with different levels of authentication and different functions and purposes. We have a humanistic and cultural vision of heritage and from the concrete knowledge of the current management of cultural heritage by public bodies in the various Member States. The project focuses on the following key points: 1) Development of models based on the use of the most advanced digital technologies to be made available to the authorities of the individual Member States responsible for safeguarding cultural heritage. 2) Develop online heritage management models, which use the most advanced technologies to ensure an economic return also for Digital Cultural Heritage. 3) Promote dialogue and networking between bodies responsible for the protection of cultural heritage and policy makers. The Research Unit of the University of Messina will contribute to the realization of various tasks and WPs envisaged.

Overview

The UdR Unime will make the application of digital twins technology to Cultural Heritage. It will deal with all the archaeological problems related to the project on the basis of its experiences and skills. In particular, the focus will be on a case-study related to the Archaeological Museum of Blanda (Tortora, CS), rich in objects offered with traditional contents, but also through a multimedia approach. A digital twin of the museum itself will be created for a wide use. For another WP, the UNIME research unit proposes the development and development of an online GIS platform of the Lao-Mercure Valley area – specifically the municipalities of Laino Borgo (CS), Laino Castello (CS) and Castelluccio Inferiore (PZ), where Dicam-Unime holds ministerial excavation and research concessions and has stipulated special collaboration protocols with Local Authorities and the Pollino National Park. The platform will be shared between UNIME, the municipalities and the Carabinieri Command for the Protection of Cultural Heritage. The aim is to provide an agile reference tool for sharing the results of research still in progress by DICAM (archaeological map including archaeological excavations, results of territorial surveys). The platform will be further implemented with satellite images and drone mappings carried out on a regular basis, useful in order to recognize any irregular excavation activities or changes to the territory that represent a risk to the archaeological evidence in situ. It will be continuously updated with subsequent research and will constitute a working model and a useful and necessary tool for the protection of the heritage of Cultural and Landscape Heritage. All the data collected while searching in the area of the Lao-Mercure valley and the digital twins for the Blanda Museum will constitute a gigantic computer database in open source mode
