“Sicilian MicronanoTech Research And Innovation Center–SAMOTHRACE” WP 6 Cultural Heritage

Group
As part of the PNRR calls for the so-called Innovation Ecosystems, Unime has become SPOKE of the project, just funded, entitled "Sicilian Micronano Tech Research And Innovation Center – SAMOTHRACE". Within the project the four Sicilian universities, INGV, CNR and numerous national partners in the business field are engaged with a project focus on the use of micro and nanotechnologies to design and manufacture innovative electronic devices (sensors and devices) in various areas. In particular, the project moves on 6 distinct WP, six strategic innovation assets, namely Energy, Environment, Health, Smart Mobility, Agritech and Cultural Heritage. In WP 6 Cultural Heritage a large research group has been set up, with a multidisciplinary approach. For the Dicam participates a group of teachers belonging to our Doctorate (specialists in archaeological and numismatic heritage and strategies for the protection and enhancement of Cultural Heritage) who will contribute to the realization of the two tasks envisaged.

Overview

The group's research line concerns an integrated and global approach to produce innovative micro and nano devices to be applied to the field of Cultural Heritage. Specifically, it is a matter of creating innovative micro-nano sensors to be used indoors and outdoors for the conservation and use of archaeological areas, museums, monuments and finds. The project will have a concrete application, through case studies, related to archaeological sites and individual contexts of materials, with targeted actions related to diagnostics and conservation. Systems will be developed for the determination of site-specific chemical species (indoor and outdoor subaerial environment, underwater) in order to create a multi-sensory platform for the study of archaeological materials. Once the types of sensors have been identified, they will be positioned in the most critical points of the site of interest: by way of example, for artifacts located in sub-aerial environments, meteorological parameters (temperature, wind direction/ intensity, relative humidity, etc.) and concentration of indoor and outdoor atmospheric contaminants, such as particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), VOCs and other site-specific chemical species, will be measured. Finally, the analytical data will be correlated with the environmental ones through chemometric methods in order to understand what role the measured variables have in the aging processes. In parallel, we will move on to the evaluation of the surfaces of stone samples, of the bulk, to verify the stability of the active mineralogical phases and, through spectroscopic and diffractometric techniques, we will proceed to the characterization, to the microscopic to macroscopic domain, to the compositional and structural properties of the rocks. At the same time, imaging techniques will allow to visualize the evolution of porosity, fractures and disintegration of rocks, penetration and mobility of fluids, also in relation to the texture of rocks and the type of products used for their conservation, to establish characteristics of durability and variability over time.
