Archaeological Mission at the Sanctuary of Apollo in Halaesa Archonidea

Group
The research group is made up of researchers from the Universities of Messina and Oxford engaged in the scientific fields of archeology, ancient history, epigraphy, and numismatics. The group also has specialized skills in the field of remote sensing, photogrammetry, and data management in the GIS environment. In particular, the DiCAM contributes specialist skills in the field of classical archeology (L-ANT / 07) and numismatics (L-ANT / 04). Archaeologists from various Italian and foreign universities are involved annually in field research activities.

Overview

The research group is engaged in activities aimed at the knowledge and enhancement of the monumental complex of the Sanctuary of Apollo in the archaeological site of Alesa Arconidea, in today's municipality of Tusa (ME), according to an integrated approach and making use of the most advanced investigation methodologies in the historical-archaeological field. Analysis of literary, numismatic and epigraphic sources; study of aerial and satellite images; topographical and detailed survey of the archaeological structures; creation of a new cartographic base; creation and management of the GIS; surface survey; design and implementation of geophysical and magnetic prospecting; planning and execution of extensive archaeological excavations; collection, classification, filing and study of the recovered mobile finds; study of the coin finds from current excavations and from previous archeological investigations, published and unpublished, aimed at the reconstruction of coin circulation and of the production of the local mint; archaeometric investigations aimed at characterizing stone materials and studying conservation strategies; historicization of the results obtained in order to reconstruct the history of the Sanctuary, its monumental layout in a diachronic perspective, the cultic activities and their modifications over time.
