Description
Angela Scala graduated in Medicinal Chemistry and Technology (110/110 cum laude) at the University of Messina (Italy) in 2006. In 2010 she received the PhD in Chemical Sciences. In 2008, she spent six months at the School of Chemistry of Trinity College Dublin (Ireland) as a Visiting PhD scholar. From 2010 to 2014 she carried out research activity at the University of Messina and at the CNR-ISMN. In 2014 she became Assistant Professor in Organic Chemistry at the University of Messina.
In 2021 she became Associate Professor in Organic Chemistry and she works at the Laboratory of Organic Synthesis and bioMaterials (SYMAT Labs) at the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences, University of Messina. In 2023 she was granted the “National Scientific Habilitation” for Full Professor in Organic Chemistry.
Her scientific activity is focused on the functionalization of nanomaterials (e.g. biopolymers, cyclodextrins, carbon-based nanomaterials and metal nanoparticles) for biological applications and on the synthesis and characterization of biomolecules. Her principal skills include organic synthesis and characterization; functionalization of biomaterials by covalent and supramolecular methods ; formulation of polymeric nanoparticles; nanomedicine; drug delivery. She has published about 75 articles in top ranked journals (h index: 20, Citations: 1250; source Scopus, 29.6.2022).
She is currently Editor of Processes (MDPI); Guest Editor of the Special Issue : “Materials for Photobiology 2.0” (Int. J. Mol. Sci; MDPI); and of the Special Issue “State-of-the-Art in Antiviral Therapy and Viral Diseases Diagnosis an Update to 2022-2023” (Biomolecules; MDPI). She is Review Editor for Frontiers in Chemistry (specialty section Supramolecular Chemistry). She has recently joined the Editorial Committee of the "Messina University Press". She was awarded the prestigious "József Szejtli" International Prize 2022.
