Research activity
• Deputy-team leader of the UniMe cluster of the ALICE@CERN experiment, member of the hadronic resonances research group. The study of the production of K*(892)± and Sigma*(1385) by analyzing the ALICE data at different collision types. The study of resonances that have a life time of the order of fm/c (comparable with the time scale of the production of the "fireball" in ultra-relativistic collisions between heavy ions) is particularly important to characterize the hadronic phase in these collisions . In particular, the study of resonances with different lifetimes allows us to explore dense and excited systems at different time scales. The production of resonances after the "chemical freeze-out" can be modified by regeneration and rescattering phenomena between the decay products. The competition between these two effects determines the production of the resonances themselves. In this thesis work, it is proposed to measure the transverse momentum spectra and the “yield” of the K*(892)± and Sigma(1385) resonances under different conditions of collision centrality and with different pairs of reactants. These resonances have similar lifetimes, 4fm/c and 5.5fm/c respectively, and will be reconstructed through their main decay modes K0s+pi± and pi+ pi± . No measurements for these resonances have been made in Pb-Pb collisions at LhC. Recent measurements of the production of charged K* resonances in pp collisions have shown how these are equal to those of neutral K*, but with decidedly smaller systematics. It is interesting to be able to confirm, with better systematics, the suppression in the production of neutral K* observed in central collisions between heavy ions. It is also important to be able to show that although K* and Sigma* have similar lifetimes, no suppression in production was observed for Sigma* resonance.
• Member of the international collaboration EEE, for the study of cosmic rays with the use of MRPC technology muon telescopes. Local responsible for the single telescope system response simulation.
• Measurement of the hadronic cross section and of the form factors through the phenomenon of radiation emission in the initial state ISR in the e+e- colliders (physics of the "continuum"), within the international collaboration KLOE-2 at the facility DAFNE of the INFN - Frascati National Laboratories. In this research field, the undersigned has personally contributed to the precision measurement (~1%) via ISR of the form factor of the double production of pions normalized to that of muons. This measure is particularly important because it allows to estimate the hadronic contribution to the estimation of the magnetic anomaly of the muon. The undersigned also contributed as one of the principal investigators to the measurement of the upper limit to the coupling factor and of a hypothetical U-boson dark force mediator in the e+e- processes in leptons and hadrons and research in the combined mmg and ppg channel.
• Field of photo-nuclear reactions induced by back-scattering photons of energy up to 1.5 GeV (laser source on 6 GeV electrons of the cyclotron) on free (liquid hydrogen target) and quasifree (liquid deuterium target) protons, on quasi-free neutrons (target of liquid deuterium) and on bound nucleons (target of Carbon 12) for the production of p0, p-, p+, h, w, eta' and phi mesons and the study of baryon resonances through the determination of the observables of polarization such as for example the asymmetry of the S beam (in collaboration with INFN Section Rome2 Tor Vergata, INFN Section Catania, ESRF Grenoble - France);
• Within the Graal collaboration, the undersigned contributed to the first beam asymmetry measurements of the photoproduction of mesons h and p0 on neutrons, and was responsible (main investigator) for the beam asymmetry measurements of p - on neutrons of h' on proton. These measurements represent an important source of information in the research field of baryon resonances, since neutron asymmetry measurements are completely new to existing theoretical models, which have shown serious gaps in the ability to take these results into account. The threshold measurement of the h' asymmetry is also of considerable importance as an oscillating trend around zero was found (contrary to what was expected on the production threshold) revealing the possible interferences of resonances of the P-D or S-F type ; this measure is the subject of great interest in this research field (arXiv:1407.6991 – Published in Eur. Phys. J A - 2015).
• Field of nuclear reactions induced by heavy ions for the synthesis of heavy and superheavy nuclei with large charge and mass values (in collaboration with the JINR of Dubna, INR of Tashkent - Uzbekistan).
In this activity, the undersigned has contributed to the development of models and codes for calculating the cross sections of evaporation, fission and emission residues of neutrons, protons and a particles during the de-excitation of the compound nucleus. This research has led to a constant scientific production aimed at understanding the reaction dynamics in the production processes of heavy and superheavy elements. This research is of particular importance as it allows to estimate what are the ideal experimental reaction conditions (energy of the beam, charge asymmetry and mass of the reactants) in order to be able to synthesise superheavy elements.
• Field of photonuclear reactions induced by bremsstrahlung radiation of energy up to 2.5 GeV and with circularly and linearly polarized beam (in collaboration with INFN section Rome2 Tor Vergata Rome, INFN section Pavia, INFN Frascati National Laboratory, University of Bonn – Germany);
• Field of the study of Bremsstrahlung radiation emitted in coincidence with the decay (alpha, cluster, fission) of heavy nuclei (in collaboration with the Institute for the Nuclear Reactions of the Moscow State University, Moscow- Russia and with the Institute for Nuclear Research of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Kiev – Ukraine);
• Experimental analysis of the energy levels of 6Li and 6He light nuclei by means of the nuclear reactions induced by a-particles on tritium target in collaboration with the INR of Kiev;
• Studies on the mechanism of image formation on the Shroud of Turin in collaboration with Prof. G. Fazio of the University of Messina.
