Description
Dario Bruneo received the degree in Computer Engineering from the University of Palermo (Italy) in 2000. From 2001 to 2002 he worked as a researcher at the Research and Development Laboratory of the Engineering Ingegneria Informatica (S.p.A). In 2005 he received the Ph.D. in “Advanced Technologies for Information Engineering” at the University of Messina (Italy) He is currently a Professor at the Department of Engineering of the University of Messina.
The research activity of Dario Bruneo has been focused on the study of distributed systems with particular regards to the management of advanced service provisioning, to the use of analytical modeling formalisms and to the investigation of performance evaluation techniques. Different research fields have been investigated ranging from ad-hoc and sensor networks to Grid and Cloud computing paradigms. Recently, his research activity is focused on the Internet of Things (IoT) technology and its integration in Smart Environment and Smart City scenarios, on the Edge and Fog computing paradigms as well as on the study of machine learning techniques, in particular deep learning, and their applications in cyber physical systems. He is one of the leader of the #SmartMe project (http://smartme.unime.it), a crowdfunded project born with the aim to encourage a conversation with the municipality of Messina in order to spur the creation of a novel virtual ecosystem based upon the IoT paradigm. He is also one of the designer and developer of the Stack4Things framework (http://stack4things.unime.it) an OpenStack-based IoT framework developed by the Mobile and Distributed Systems Lab (MDSLab) at the University of Messina.
He is co-author of 100+ scientific papers published in prestigious international journals and magazines (IEEE Transactions on Computer, IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems, IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering, Elsevier Computer Networks, IEEE Computer) and international workshop and conferences.
The research activity of Dario Bruneo has been conducted within several projects by collaborating with national and international researchers. Among the national and international scientific collaborations the ones who stand out are the Duke University (USA), the University of Kazan (Russia), the National Technical University of Athens (Greece), the IIIT- AllaHabad (India), the Missouri University of Science and Technology (USA).
He is co-founder of the company SmartMe.io s.r.l. (http://smartme.io), a spin-off company of the University of Messina born from the experience of the #SmartMe project. SmartMe.io is a startup whose mission is to design and implement products combining open source and low-cost IoT technologies with OpenStack-based Cloud technologies and AI solutions for providing best-in-class solutions for Metering, Devices and Fleet Management, Monitoring, Crowdsensing and other aspects related to Smart Environments.
Finally, he is coordinator of the Messina Node of the “Embedded Systems & Smart Manufacturing” and the “Artificial Intelligence and Intelligent Systems” National Laboratories of the Consorzio Interuniversitario Nazionale per l’Informatica (CINI).
He is IEEE Senior member.
