Siniscola Survey

Group

Overview

The project, under ministerial concession (MIC|MIC_SABAP-SS|16/09/2024|0014366-P, archaeological officer responsible for the area: Dr. Enrico Dirminti), was created with the aim of defining in a diachronic sense the complexity of the peopling in the municipal territory of Siniscola (Nu). The area has never been the subject of an ongoing research project; nevertheless occasional finds, censuses and the interest of some scholars allow us to understand the archaeological potential of the Siniscola countryside, which is affected by numerous evidences such as the nuragic village of Luthuthai, consisting of about twenty huts and affected by a reoccupation in the Roman age, or the site of Rempellos, near the Berchida river basin, which shows traces of frequentation from the nuragic, Roman, medieval and post-medieval ages. The Portus Luguidonis mentioned in the sources probably stood on the coast, while the discovery at Mount Albo of a fragment of an Apulian crater from the mid-4th B.C. has rekindled the debate about the location of Feronia, a Roman colony founded according to sources in 378-7 B.C. The project, whose ultimate goal is the production of an archaeological map of the area, makes use of the methods and sources typical of Landscape Archaeology: field reconnaissance, analysis of historical photos, satellite and drone imagery, historical and modern cartography, and the study of material culture.
