Skotoussa and its countryside. Archaeology of a major Thessalian city

Group
The research group consists of a principal investigator (prof. Gioacchino Francesco La Torre, DiCAM, Unime), who coordinates the project aimed at studying the archaeology of the ancient Thessalian center of Skotoussa (Greece), with particular regard to its territory, in order to understand its exploitation and contacts with the rest of the region through the study of archaeological and numismatic evidence (numismatic sector supervised by prof.ssa Mariangela Puglisi, DiCAM, Unime) and through archaeological prospecting and geo-physical analysis (Dr. Giovanni Leucci, CNR, Lecce). The in situ supervisor is an archaeologist from the Ephoria of Larissa (Dr. Sophia Karapanou).

Overview

The group's line of research concerns an integrated and comprehensive approach to the study of an ancient city and its territory, from Prehistoric to Byzantine times. Building on the research, already carried out through the ongoing Skotoussa Project (SKOPRO), benefiting from an advanced collection of literary, epigraphic and numismatic sources and bibliography, the project intends to focus on field research (surveys, geophysical prospecting and excavation) and on the diachronic study of the territory in relation to the various phases of the ancient city's life in order to historicize the analyzed archaeological and numismatic data that will be entered into a specially prepared GIS.
