ArcheoTroina

Group
The international research group is made up of archaeologists from various institutions and independent researchers, but also from scholars of other disciplines. All cooperate, in an interdisciplinary relationship, each according to their own skills, in research aimed at the reconstruction of the history of Troina (EN) with a global approach that includes methods of different disciplines applied to data returned by the “Catena” area. In particular, the group includes scholars and doctoral candidates from the DICAM of the University of Messina of the SSD L-ANT/10, L-ANT/04, L-ANT/03. Other scholars (historians, doctors, physicist, etc.) belong to the Universities of Salento, Campania Vanvitelli and the Flinders University-Adelaide (South Australia), an archaeologist is currently a researcher at the University of Gothenburg, an architect is an associate member of LA3M Aix-Marseille University, etc. The work of the group, as regards excavations and the study of archaeological materials, is authorized by the Parco archeologico della Villa del Casale with which the DICAM (UniME) is in accordance with a Convention. The collaboration with the FAPAB Research Center-Avola is also sanctioned by an agreement with the Messina Department.

Overview

The research line of the group concerns an integrated and global approach to the study of an ancient city abandoned through the following steps: collection of literary and epigraphic sources; collection of bibliography; study of historical archival sources and cartography and of available aerial and satellite images; topographic survey and detail of the structures in view; creation and management of GIS; reliefs and surface surveys in urban and extraurban areas; design and realization of geophysical prospections; design and execution of extensive and intensive archaeological excavation campaigns with public archaeology paths; collection, classification, archiving and study of mobile finds returned from excavations, including those of the '60s-'80s; archaeometric analysis of mobile finds for chronology (C14) and determination of origin (artifacts and ecofacts); paleoanthropological analysis, paleopathological and paleomedical on the human osteological findings; archaeozoological and archaeobotanic analysis; entomological analysis; historicization of the results obtained in order to reconstruct the history of the city, from its first phases of frequentation (Hellenistic period) to the most recent, post-mediaeval periods in its various aspects; valorization and fruition of the area and of the archaeological finds through installations of exhibitions and museums; paths of participation of the local community. The group’s activities are also communicated through the "ArcheoTroina" pages on Facebook and Instagram. The results of the research are published in scientific journals.
