Cell Biology, embryotoxicology, biomarkers and biomonitoring of aquatic ecosystems

L’attività del gruppo di ricerca è rivolta principalmente all’ecocitotossicologia e al biomonitoraggio di ambienti naturali acquatici, utilizzando come organismi bioindicatori invertebratie bassi vertebrati, al fine di valutare gli effetti biologici di contaminanti tradizionali (metalli, idrocarburi) ed emergenti (nanoparticelle, farmaci, microplastiche), sia su organismi adulti che su stadi embrionali. Per valutare gli effetti degli inquinanti sul biota acquatico, i biomarkers applicati sono di tipo istologico, istochimico, immunistochimico, molecolare, enzimatico, e metabolomico, mediante spettroscopia di risonanza magnetica nucleare protonica (1H NMR) e i relativi approcci bioinformatici e chemiometrici. L’utilizzo di un approccio multi-biomarkersfornisce una panoramica dello stato metabolico di un sistema biologico in risposta a stress ambientali, malattie o esposizione a sostanze tossiche.
