Description
Rosaria Costa is Associate Professor of Analytical Chemistry in the Department of Biomedical, Dental, Morphological and Functional Imaging Sciences (BIOMORF) at the University of Messina (UniME), Italy. Dr. Costa received her Master’s Degree in Pharmacy in 1997 from UniME. From 1998-99, she performed post-graduate research in the laboratory of the Chemistry Department of Virginia Tech, Blacksburg (USA), where she practised chromatographic techniques under the supervision of prof. dr. Harold M. McNair. From 1999-2002, she worked as hospital pharmacist with temporary positions at the University Hospital G. Martino of Messina. From 2003-2006, she performed doctoral study in Production and Safety of Food of Animal Origin, and received her Ph.D. degree from the University of Sassari, Italy. Financial support to her postdoctoral research (4 years research grant, 2006-2010) was by Shimadzu Corps. and Supelco/Sigma-Aldrich, for which she contributed developing GC-MS products and analytical methods. In 2011, she received Postgraduate Qualification in Pharmacognosy from the University of Messina. From 2011-2017, she was Assistant Profilessor of Analytical Chemistry at the Dept. of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Since 2003 she has been co-PI in external grant support and contracts.
Her research interests span the fundamentals of gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry, applied through mono- and multidimensional methodologies to the analysis of natural products, embracing the fields of plant science and of food, environmental, and green chemistry. To this aim, part of her research activity focuses on sample preparation techniques, giving particular emphasis to miniaturized and green methodologies. Additionally, she exploits HPLC-MS for the elucidation of molecules of biological interest. Other research threads currently pursued by dr. Costa are the recognition of health-promoting substances from foods and the reutilization of industrial/commercial wastes.
Since years, she is very active in the peer-reviewing process for many highly qualified journals from the field of analytical chemistry. She also serves as referee for the Italian Minister of Education and Research.
She is author of 102 peer-reviewed publications, including research articles, and book chapters; and over 130 presentations, posters, and invited talks in International Symposia. She has been in the Organizing Committee of a number of conferences.
