CURRENT ROLE

From 2 December 2019 (DR. Prot. N. 120265/19) to date he is Full Professor of Economic-Political Geography SSD M-GGR / 02 at the Department of Cognitive, Psychological, Pedagogical and Cultural Studies of the University of Messina.
From November 30th 2016 (DR. n. 2591/16) to December 1st 2019 he was Associate Professor of Political and Economic Geography (SSD M-GGR/02) in the University of Messina, Department of Cognitive Sciences, Psychology, Educational and Cultural Studies.
From March 1st2009 to November29th2016 he was Assistant Professor of Economic and Political Geography (SSD M-GGR/02) in the Department of Political, Communication and International Relationships Science in the University of Macerata and also Aggregate Professor of Economic and Political Geography and Tourism Policy in the University of Messina, Department of Cognitive Sciences, Psychology, Educational and Cultural Studies.

EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS
2017 (on March 28)
He obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN 2016) as full professor in Geography (11/B1).
2014 (on February 19)
He obtained the National Scientific Qualification (ASN 2012) as Associate Professor in Geography (11/B1).
2004
He earned a PHD in “Territorial Organization and sustainable development in Europe” cycle XVI, at the University of Catania.

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITIES

The scientific activity is documented by publications about several areas of geography, with particular reference to Urban, Economic and Tourist Geography.
The principal research projects were on subjects like the interdependencies between city activities and their impact on the urban ecosystem, considering the local policies addressed to the improvement of citizens and children’s quality of life.
Various publications have dealt with several issues related to tourism development in Sicily, with particular reference to the harbor, cultural routes and development of ceramics as related to tourism.
The recent studies are on: 1) environmental and urban redevelopments, such as economical and cultural growth opportunities and tourism and local development; 2) conversion of expenditures and the new functional and organizational aspects of municipal commercial functions; 3) territorial and sustainable competitiveness” to carry out the Lisbon/Gothenburg processes; 4) the evolution of the Mediterranean geopolitical order.
In the macroregional context he has approached geo-economic and geopolitical studies in the countries of the Mediterranean basin, reflecting on matters such as the economic and the territorial unbalances, regional conflicts, geopolitical instability and the failure of the European Union regarding political action in the Mediterranean.

He participated in the following A.Ge.I Working Groups: “Il commercio tra tradizione e innovazione”; "Media e geografia"; “Riordino territoriale e sviluppo locale. Quali elementi di contatto?”; "Una rete ecomuseale per la valorizzazione delle identità locali"; “Geografia dei trasporti e della logistica”.

He also participated in the International Research Group: "Ciudad, Comercio Urbano y Consumo" Coordinator: Prof. Carles Carreras, Departament de Geografia Humana Universitat de Barcelona (Spagna).

• He took part in the Scientific and Organizing Committee of the International Conference “Gli spazi del commercio nei processi di trasformazione urbana”, located in Catania 25-26 October, 2007 and organized inside the A.Ge.I Working Group “Il commercio tra tradizione e innovazione” coordinated by Prof. Caterina Cirelli.
• He took part in the Organizing Committee of the International Conference “Percorsi creativi di turismo urbano”, located in Catania from 22 to 24September, 2011, coordinated by Caterina Cirelli, Girolamo Cusimano, Elena Di Blasi.
• He took part in the Organizing Committee of the 55th National Conference of Italian Association of Teachers of Geography “Le Marche nella Macroregione Adriatico - Ionica. Aggiornamenti scientifici e didattici” located in Macerata from 27 September to 5 October, 2012.
• He took part to the Scientific Committee of the workshop “Le nuove geografie del consume tra crisi e resilienza. Quali opportunità per Catania?, organized by the Economy and Enterprise Department in the University of Catania, under the auspices of AGeI and the SGI of Catania, on 12 May 12, 2017.
• Through the cooperation with Enrico Nicosia (University of Macerata) and Libera D’Alessandro (University of Naples “the Oriental”) he coordinated the session (S37) Oltre la “new retail geography”: teorie, politiche e pratichedeiluoghi del commercionellacittà, inside the XXXII Italian Geographical Congress “L’apporto della Geografia tra rivoluzioni e riforme”, located in Rome, 7-10 June, 2017.

He was elected (after deliberation of Department Council on 16.12.2015) a member of the Joint Committee in the Department of Cognitive Sciences, Psychology, Educational and Cultural Studies at the University of Messina. Vice President since November 2016.

He took part as academic member to the Commission for the final exam of TFA for the attainment of the qualification in Geography (A039) in the Humanities Department in University of Macerata (Rector’s Decree n. 383 of 11.07.2013).

He took part as a member to the Commission for the attainment of the qualification of PhD in “Scienze del Turismo: metodologie, modelli e politiche”, XXIII° Cycle, in the University of Palermo.

TUTORING ACTIVITIES
From February 2011 to February 2012, he was the academic tutor of Dr. Annarita Gentili academic tutor in order to develop her project in “Strategic marketing in the tourist sector”. This project was carried out by the Province of Macerata under the initiative “Borse di studio per la realizzazione di progetti di ricerca” - POR Marche FSE 2007-2013.

• He was selected by the University of Catania to teach geographic disciplines (over 600 hours) in several High School IFTS courses in many High Schools in the Syracuse and Catania Provinces.
