Dr. Antonella Smeriglio, RTD-B in Pharmaceutical Biology (SSD BIO/15) at the University of Messina, Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences (ChiBioFarAm), graduated in Pharmacy from the same University, where she subsequently obtained a PhD in Experimental, Environmental and Occupational Toxicology, the title of expert researcher in the nutraceutical and pharmaceutical field, and specialization in Pharmacognosy. She also holds a II level Masters in Phytotherapy at the University of Siena. Her research lines mainly focus on the phytochemical characterization and the study of some biological activities of plant extracts and their bioactive compounds such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cytoprotective, anti-melanogenic, anti-angiogenic and antimicrobial activities. To this end, over the years, she has gained considerable experience in the development and validation of various analytical methods of liquid and gas chromatography, mass spectrometry and atomic absorption, as well as various in vitro cell-free, cell-based, and in vivo assays to test the aforementioned biological activities. She is author of 104 articles in peer-reviewed international journals, 3 book chapters and over 100 contributions to national and international conferences, of which 7 invitated lectures and 1 as chairperson. Associate Editor of BMC Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Plants and Frontiers in Pharmacology, and guest editor in various special issues of peer-reviewed international journals, she holds two patents for the delivery of bioactive compounds of plant origin and winner of 8 national and international awards, for her scientific contributions.
