CALIRI Elena

Elena Caliri is Professor of Roman History at the Department of Ancient and Modern Civilizations (University of Messina).

Fields of expertise
- Social and economic history of the ancient world and Late Antiquity with special attention to agrarian history, the management of landed estates in Southern Italy and Sicily
- Gregory the Great’s Registrum Epistularum
- Papyri of Ravenna published by Tjäder
- Slavery and other forms of dependency in the ancient world
- Institutions and political organization in Late Antiquity and in the Early Byzantine period
- Sicilian hagiographic literature
- Relationship between Romans and Barbarians

Education and Academic Career
- 1988: Degree in Lettere Classiche (DLitt), University of Messina (110/110 cum laude).
- 1994: PhD in Ancient History, University of Messina.
- 1992-2001: tenured teacher of Humanities, Latin and Greek in secondary schools (Liceo Classico).
- 2002-2014: Researcher for Roman History (with tenure), University of Messina.
- 2014-2022: Associate Professor for Roman History, University of Messina.
-2022: Professore Ordinario

Teaching Activity
- 2002–today, ‘Roman History’ for the three years Degree Courses in Philosophy, Cultural Heritagy, Humanities and for the MA Course in Classical Tradition, University of Messina; ‘Epigraphy, Institutions and Society of the Roman World’ for the MA Course in Mediterranean Archaeology.

2007-2013: member of the Theaching Staff of the Doctorate in Ancient Archaeological and Historical Sciences (University of Messina).
2014-today: member of the Teaching Staff of the Doctoral School in Historical, Archaeological and Philological Sciences (University of Messina), with teaching and tutoring assignments.
- 2016/17: Coordinator of the XXIX PhD cycle in Ancient Archaeological and Historical Sciences.

Territorial disputes,political transformations and flexible identities in Plain Cilicia from the Early Iron Age to Late Antiquity (10th century BCE - 7th century CE)

2020-today:Participation in the Research Group of the International Center for Studies of the "Ancient Cities of Europe and the Mediterranean" (Ancient Cities).
2020-today: Counselor of the Ancient Cities ETS. Association for the study of the history of Euro-Mediterranean cities.
