MACCARI Rosanna

Rosanna Maccari is an associate professor at the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Enviromental Sciences (ChiBioFarAm) of the University of Messina (Italy). She graduated in Medicinal Chemistry and in Pharmacy with first-class honours at the University of Messina. She did a Research Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of Messina and was awarded a Ph.D. in 1997. She was a researcher of medicinal chemistry at the Faculty of Pharmacy, and then at the Department SCIFAR, of the University of Messina from 1999 to 2014. Since 2014 she has been an associate professor of medicinal chemistry. Since 1999 she has carried out teaching activity in medicinal chemistry subject courses at the Faculty of Pharmacy, then at the Department SCIFAR and now at Department ChiBioFarAm of the University of Messina. She has been tutor for students on degree and Ph.D. courses and supervisor of undergraduate experimental research and thesis preparation. She has been a member of the teaching body of the Ph.D. Courses in Medicinal Sciences and in Chemical Sciences at the University of Messina. She has been in charge of quality assurance of the degree course in Pharmacy of the University of Messina.
Rosanna Maccari is author of more than fifty scientific papers and one book chapter published in refereed international journals dealing with various aspects of medicinal chemistry and has made numerous presentations at national and international conferences.
Her main areas of expertise are: drug design, chemical synthesis, lead discovery and optimization in medicinal chemistry. Currently, her main research interests concern the design, synthesis, molecular modelling and structure/activity relationship studies of: a) protein tyrosine phosphatase inhibitors, as novel agents to fight insulin resistance and related pathologies; b) aldo-keto reductase inhibitors, to fight diabetic complications, cancer and inflammatory pathologies. In recent years she has also been engaged in the search for the identification of new antitubercular, anti-inflammatory, antitumoral and antiviral agents. She collaborates with Italian and Foreign research centres. She is an Editorial Board member of the international scientific journal Molecules. She is a reviewer for several international journals of medicinal chemistry. She is a member of the Italian Chemical Society. She has been a member of the executive board of the Sicily section of Italian Chemical Society.
