Abstract:
This paper presents a retrospective study carried out on a sample of 36 patients affected by different parotid gland pathologic entities surgically treated at the Department of Maxillofacial Surgery of Messina University, G Martino Policlinic between 2001-2007. The patients media age was 55,3, and the group was formed by 27 males , and 9 females. Accurate anamnesis and clinical examination was performed in all patients. Preoperatory diagnosis was assisted by ecography, fine needle aspiration under ecography, CT with and without contrast and MRI. 27/36 patients were categorized as benign: 23 cases of pleomorphic adenoma, 3 cases of Warthin’s tumor and 1 case of oncocytome. Other tumors diagnosticated were: 1 mucoepidermoid carcinoma, 1 squamocellular carcinoma, 1 myoepithelioma, 2 recidivant pleomorphic adenomas, 1 nodular lesion with epitheliomorphic epidermoidal elements, 1 Kaposi’s sarcoma, 1 hemangioendothelioma, 1 hyperplastic reactive intraparenquimal lymphonode. A sistematic review of the literature about surgical techniches, outcomes and complications of parotid surgical treatments is provided.
