Abstract:
Benign myoclonic epilepsy in infancy is characterized by the occurrence of brief myoclonic attacks in normally
developed infants aged between 4 months and 3 years. Ictal EEG shows generalized spike-wave or polyspikewave
discharges. Although the myoclonic attacks are usually controlled by valproate treatment, the use of
other antiepileptic agents with fewer side effects is reasonable in treating such a benign condition. Leve -
tiracetam is a relatively new antiepileptic drug, effective as antimyoclonic agent, and shows very few side
effects. We describe a child affected by benign myoclonic epilepsy successfully treated with levetiracetam.
