Abstract:
The excavation of the northern wall of Sofiana : Unpublished contexts from the early and middle
imperial age in south-central Sicily · The site of Sofiana is located approximately 6 km SW of the Villa
del Casale in Piazza Armerina, positioned midway along the hypothetical route of the Roman road
Catina-Agrigentum. The site was initially excavated in the 1950s and 1960s under the direction of D.
Adamesteanu. Research activities resumed in 1988, led by G. F. La Torre, who uncovered a long
stretch of wall marking the northern boundary of the settlement. A re-evaluation of the excavation
– taking into account the most recent findings from the Philosophiana Project – allows for new
hypotheses regarding the site’s topography. The excavation also yielded a significant quantity of
pottery dating to the early and middle Imperial period, which help contextualize Sofiana within
the broader framework of trade flows from Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean.
