Tolemeo di Mauretania. L’ideologia politica e la morte a Roma nel settembre del 40

The paper, through the analysis of literary, numismatic and epigraphic sources, and through the contribution of statuary, aims at investigating the causes that determined first the fall
into disgrace, and then the death sentence of Ptolemy of Mauretania. A set of reasons, the
main of which have an ideological-political and cultural nature, and can be summarized in a
self-congratulatory intention, is behind the death sentence of the king, that we propose to contextualize in Rome, after a period of imprisonment, not before September 40 BC, when Caligula went back from Campania.
