Abstract:
This paper wants to examine what kind of urban design we need to meet the new,
increasing demand for urban spaces beauty (as high quality, liveable and meaningful) arising
from contemporary society. It will consider and develop the idea of townscape as “art of
relationship”: townscape looks as the best way to translate the traditional urban design, to
integrate the perceptive experiences taking place in the modern city-labyrinth by individuals and
groups. How can we re-think, re-use and develop the lessons coming from Lynch and Cullen?
The evocative potential and the aesthetic hallmarks of urban spaces let us to develop an idea of
urban design able in transforming the whole environment made of natural and human elements.
The approach is illustrated trough an empirical application conducted in Savoca, a small Sicilian
town.
