Course Objectives

The objective will be to acquire to the student a satisfactory Theoretical knowledge and competence professional in clinical diagnosis and instrumental and in the treatment of the most widespread pathologies of the Oral Maxillofacial district and knowledge of emergency anesthesiological urgency and cardiology

The student must comply with any prerequisites indicated in the study manifesto and in the teaching regulations

Contents

The main objective of the course is to train students in the theoretical and practical skills related to surgical pathologies concerning the craniofacial district. Below is the detailed list of contents: Knowledge of Maxillofacial Pathologies Students must acquire a solid theoretical foundation regarding the main pathologies affecting the oro-maxillofacial region, namely: Facial trauma Congenital malformations Tumors and neoplasms Oral and facial infections Malformations of the temporomandibular joints. Surgical Techniques Learn and understand the surgical techniques used in the treatment of these pathologies, such as facial fracture surgery, bone reconstruction, and soft tissue management. Learn techniques for local and general anesthesia, postoperative pain management, and preoperative preparation. Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment Students must be able to perform differential diagnoses for the most common maxillofacial pathologies and understand when it is necessary to refer the patient for surgical intervention. Treatment of Craniofacial Deformities Deepen the management of craniofacial deformities, such as those related to congenital malformations (e.g., cleft lip or palate), and acquire skills for treating acquired malformations (such as those resulting from trauma). Orthognathic Treatment Teach students how to treat masticatory dysfunctions and facial skeletal anomalies through orthognathic surgery, to correct misalignments of facial bones and the jaw. Interdisciplinary Approach Learn to collaborate with other healthcare professionals, such as maxillofacial surgeons, orthodontists, and general practitioners, for the treatment of complex pathologies involving the craniofacial district. Ethical and Legal Aspects of Surgery Understand the legal and ethical aspects related to surgical practices, such as informed consent, management of surgical risks, and professional responsibility. Postoperative Management Acquire skills in postoperative management, monitoring patient recovery, managing complications, and providing follow-up instructions. Development of Practical Skills Participate in practical internships in the operating room. Surgical procedure simulations with models to improve manual skills and the management of surgical emergencies. Research and Scientific Update Promote research capabilities in the field of maxillofacial surgery, with a focus on the updating of techniques and technological innovations in craniofacial surgery. The course thus aims to provide comprehensive training that not only develops clinical and surgical skills but also cognitive and relational abilities, which are essential for effectively treating patients in the highly specialized context of maxillofacial surgery.
