Description
Edoardo Spina was born in Castellammare di Stabia (NA) in 1956. He graduated in Medicine at the University of Messina in 1981 with full marks and honors. He became specialist in Neurology (1985) and Psychiatry (1991) at the same university. From 1983 to 1987 he was visiting scientist at the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, Huddinge University Hospital at Karolinska Institute, Stockholm, Sweden, where in January 1987 he took the Ph D in Clinical Pharmacology. From January to March 1987 he was visiting professor at the Department of Pharmacology and Psychiatry, University of Extremadura, Badajoz, Spain. From 1992 contract professor at the school of specialisation in Pharmacology at Messina University. In November 1998 he became Associate Professor of Pharmacology at Institute of Pharmacology, University of Messina. In June 2005 he was promoted to Full Professor of Pharmacology at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine and Pharmacology. From 2004 to 2008 he has been head of the School of Specialisation in Pharmacology,University of Messina. Since 2008 he is responsible for the university of Messina of the School of Specialisation in Medical Pharmacology, University of Catania. Co-ordinator of the PhD course in Clibical Psychpharmacology of Developing Age (2008 and 2009), in Clinical and Experimental Neuropsychopharmacology and Applications in Neurorehabilitation from 2010 to 2012), and in Clinical and Experimental Biomedical Sciences (from 2013 to 2018) at the University of Messina. From 2009 to 2012 vice dean of the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Messina. From 2014 to 2020 President of the Ethics Committee of the district of Messina. From 2018 Coordinator of the Course of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Messina.
For several years Prof. Spina has been co-ordinator of the integrated course of Pharmacology and Toxicology, degree in Medicine and Surgery, and of the integrated course of Psychopharmacology, degree in Clinical Psychology, University of Messina. He is also responsible for the teaching of pharmacology at many schools of specialization, University of Messina.
His main scientific interests are clinical neuropsychopharmacology and drug metabolism. In particular, he has been involved in studies on the pharmacokinetics and drug interactions of antidepressants, antipsychotics and mood stabilizers, on the implications of pharmacogenetics in psychiatry and on the role of therapeutic drug monitoring of psychotropic drugs. He is also interested in pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacovigilance of psychotropic drugs.
Author of 280 articles in international journals, 28 chapters in scientific books, more than 500 abstracts related to participation to congresses and co-editor of the books “Pharmacogenomics in Psychiatry” and "Pharmacovigilance in Psychiatry". Official H index according to Scopus, May 2023, is 62. He has participated and lectured in more than 200 national and international scientific meetings. He has received grants and has been principal investigator in many international (EU), national and regional research projects.
Member of several scientific societies, he has been component and secretary of the Section of Clinical Pharmacology of the Italian Society of Pharmacology from 2003 to 2007. He has been component of the Executive Committee of the European Association for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics from 2011 to 2017.
Since 2020 Prof. Spina is Editor-in-Chief of CNS & Neurological Disorders – Drug Targets. Associate Editor of Frontiers in Pharmacogenetics and Pharmacogenomics, member of the editorial board of Therapeutic Drug Monitoring, Basic & Clinical Pharmacology & Toxicology, European Journal of Clinical Pharmacology, Journal of Clinical Psychopharmacology, Clinical Neuropsychopharmacology and Therapeutics, Neuropsychiatric Disease and Treatment, and referee for some of the most important journals in the field of neuropsychopharmacology
