Description
Marco Calabrò is a tenure-track assistant professor (RTT) in Medical Genetics (SSD MEDS-01/A) at the University of Messina, Italy, where he conducts research, teaching, and clinical activities at the Medical Genetics and Pharmacogenetics Unit of the University Hospital “G. Martino”.
His research focuses on the genetics of neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative disorders, with particular emphasis on the interaction between genetic variants, biological pathways, and clinical phenotypes. His work integrates genomic technologies, bioinformatics, and statistical genetics to investigate complex traits and disease mechanisms.
During his career he has developed expertise in next-generation sequencing (NGS), genomic data analysis, and computational approaches for the study of genetic associations, pharmacogenetics, and molecular pathway analysis. In recent years, his research interests have expanded to include the genetic basis of neurodegenerative diseases and the interaction between genetics, physical activity, and neurorehabilitation.
Before joining the University of Messina as a university researcher, he worked as a health researcher at the IRCCS Neurolesi Center “Bonino Pulejo” in Messina. He also held post-doctoral and research fellow positions within national and international research projects focused on the genetic determinants of psychiatric disorders.
Dr. Calabrò is the author of numerous peer-reviewed scientific publications in the fields of psychiatric genetics, pharmacogenetics, molecular neuroscience, and bioinformatics, and has been involved in teaching activities related to biology and genetics.
