Description

Dr. Giancarlo Iannizzotto was born in Ragusa (Italy) on March 23, 1967.
He received the Dr. Eng. degree in electronics engineering from the University of Catania, Italy, in 1994 and the Ph.D. in Computer Science from the same University in February, 1998. From 1993 to 1996 he worked as a PhD student at the Istituto di Informatica e Telecomunicazioni, University of Catania. Since 1996 until 2006 he was Assistant Professor at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Messina, Italy. From 2006 to 2012 he was Associate professor at the same Faculty. Currently he is Associate Professor with the Department of COgnitive Sciences, Education and Cultural Studies (CSECS) at the University of Messina. His research activity mainly concentrated in the field of image analysis and processing, and in particular on computer vision applications for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). Since 1994 he participated to several national research projects. He collaborated with MediaLab at the University of Catania as the coordinator of a research group on content-based image storage and retrieval and of another group on shared virtual reality applications for e-learning. Since August, 2000 till February, 2001 he was visiting professor at the Seoul National University (SNU), Seoul, South Korea, leading a research group working on Computer Vision applications for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). At the Faculty of Engineering, University of Messina, he has directed the VisiLAB Computer Vision Laboratory.
Since 2004 until 2006 he was resposible for the Messina Unit of the PRIN04 Project "Studio e sviluppo di un sistema per il controllo ed il monitoraggio in tempo reale dei territori per la prevenzione degli incendi". The National scientific coordinator was Prof. Claudio De Martini, from the Politecnico of Turin, Italy.

Dr. Iannizzotto was vice-director of the CECUM (Centro di Calcolo, Computing Centre) at the University of Messina (2008-2013), and Rector Delegate for the informatization of the University of Messina (2013).
He is also Senior Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).
Dr. Iannizzotto is author and co-author of several publications in the fields of image retrieval, image processing and analysis, and computer vision.
