Description
Rosaria Gitto carried out her studies at University of Messina (Italy) where started and continued her research career. In 1990 took a degree in CTF, in 1991 a degree in Pharmacy, and in 1994 a PhD degree in “Pharmaceutical Sciences”.
In 1999 she became assistant researcher, in 2001 associate professor and 2018 full professor of Medicinal Chemistry. She teaches a number of courses in the Faculty of Pharmacy at University of Messina. As from 1992, she has uninterruptedly acted as tutor of post-graduate PhD students in “Pharmaceutical Sciences”. She has coaching a large number of final-year students in the preparation of their dissertations.
Since 1992 the prof. Gitto research work is mainly directed to the rational design, synthesis, stereochemical properties and structure-activity relationships (SAR) studies of neuroprotective agents antagonists of ionotropic receptors (iGluRs) of excitatory neurotransmitter L-glutamate. The research comprises both the use of computational techniques in drug discovery and innovative synthetic approaches (e.g. microwave-assisted synthesis, solution-phase parallel synthesis, etc).
Between 2001 and 2011 prof. Gitto was Scientific Coordinator of Research Projects of Messina University (PRA). She is also component of Italian Research Projects (PRIN and FIRB) and FP7 European Project.
Prof. Gitto has collaborated with several international research groups; her research activity resulted in more than 120 scientific papers published in qualified international journals, reports and communications presented at congresses and meetings.
Between 2004 and 2007 Prof. Gitto was Coordinator of second degree course in “Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Technology - CTF” and ""Pharmacy at Faculty of Pharmacy of Messina University. She is member of teaching body of PhD course in “Pharmaceutical Sciences” at Faculty of Pharmacy of Messina University.
