Description
Demetrio Milea is Full Professor of Analytical Chemistry at the CHIBIOFARAM – Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences – of the University of Messina, Italy. His research activity is mainly dedicated to the determination of thermodynamic formation parameters in multicomponent aqueous solutions. Particular attention is paid to the evaluation and modeling of the chemical speciation of ligands and cations of environmental, biological, and technological/industrial interest in real aqueous systems.
The main research topics concern: chemical speciation analysis in multicomponent aqueous solutions; chemical thermodynamics; chemical oceanography, coordination chemistry; interactions of metals and ligands with the main components of natural waters and biological fluids; determination of thermodynamic parameters (e.g., stability constants, activity coefficients, enthalpies, solubility products, etc.); dependence of chemical speciation on system conditions (e.g., ionic strength, ionic medium, pH, temperature, composition, etc.); sequestration/remediation studies; chemical speciation and interaction models for real systems of environmental, biological and technological/industrial interest; development of software for chemical speciation analysis and for the determination of thermodynamic parameters; chemical modeling.
The research activity of Prof. Milea is mainly carried out by: electrochemical techniques (potentiometry, voltammetry, coulometry); calorimetric techniques (calorimetric titrations); thermal analysis; spectroscopic techniques (UV/Vis, fluorescence, atomic spectroscopy); specialistic software.
He is currently co-author of more than 80 articles in ISI journals, 2 international book chapters, and 1 edited book, and he has presented his research at numerous national and international conferences. His research activity is carried out in collaboration with several national and international research groups. He is responsible / supervisor of visiting researchers / professors at the University of Messina, reviewer for several ISI journals, and reviewer and evaluator of research projects and national and international PhD theses. He is Associate Editor of the ISI journal Reviews in Analytical Chemistry and member of the Editorial Boards of the ISI journals Bioinorganic Chemistry and Applications, Journal of Analytical Methods in Chemistry, Frontiers in Chemistry (section Analytical Chemistry) and Current Analytical Chemistry, and of Current Physical Chemistry, as well as editor of books and serial publications with international diffusion and guest editor of special issues on ISI journals.
He was Action Chair and Grant Holder Scientific Representative of the COST Action CA18202 – NECTAR – Network for Equilibria and Chemical Thermodynamics Advanced Research; past-President of the International Group for the Thermodynamics of Metal Complexes (ISMEC Group), and he is being involved in various national and international funded projects. He is also consultant, since 2008, of a multinational company for the design, modeling and chemical speciation of real systems and consumer products.
