Prof. Francesco Crea was born in Palmi (RC) on May 5, 1972. - On July 29, 1997, he obtained a Degree in Chemistry with a final grade of 110/110 at the University of Messina, discussing a thesis entitled: “Solubility and thermal stability of complexes of linear polyamines with mellitic acid”. - In November 1997, he obtained the qualification to practice as a chemist. - He won the competition for admission to the three-year PhD course in Chemical Sciences (XIII Cycle) and obtained the title of PhD in Chemical Sciences on 18/02/2002, discussing an experimental thesis entitled: “Interactions between polysulfonic anions and polyamines: thermodynamic study, separation and determination by HPLC”, carried out at the Department of Inorganic, Analytical and Physical Chemistry of the University of Messina. - He won the competition for a position as university researcher at the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences of the University of Messina in the scientific disciplinary sector Chim/01 “Analytical Chemistry” on July 17, 2002, and from September 16, 2002 to December 15, 2010 he served at the Department of Inorganic, Analytical and Physical Chemistry. - He won the comparative evaluation for a position as Associate Professor at the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences of the University of Messina for the scientific disciplinary sector Chim/01 “Analytical Chemistry”, and from December 15, 2010 he served at the Faculty of Mathematical, Physical and Natural Sciences and from 2016 at the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences of the University of Messina. - He obtained the National Scientific Qualification 2016 for Full Professor in Analytical Chemistry (CHIM01). To date, he holds 3/3 bibliometric indicators for Full Professor qualification and for serving as a committee member in the same discipline. - He is Full Professor, pursuant to art. 18, paragraph 1, law 240/2010 for the scientific disciplinary sector CHEM/01A (formerly SSD Chim/01; Analytical Chemistry), at the University of Messina (D.R. 894/2022).
The research activity, carried out in collaboration with researchers from both Italian and international universities, focuses on studies of speciation of both metals and different classes of organic and inorganic ligands in multicomponent solutions simulating biological fluids and natural waters, and has led to the publication of 133 papers in international ISI journals and approximately 120 contributions presented at national and international conferences, including 3 book chapters published in major editorial series.
The teaching activity has been continuously carried out at the University of Messina from the academic year 2002/2003 to the present and has involved courses in Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Chemistry, GERIT (Master’s degree in Territorial Risk Management), and Environmental Sustainability and Innovation (degree class LM-27), within the disciplines of SSD CHIM/01 and CHIM/12. Prof. Crea has been/is both chair of examination committees for the courses he has taught and a member of examination committees within SSD CHIM/01 and CHIM/12.
He has continuously carried out supplementary teaching and student support activities (Bachelor’s, Master’s, and PhD theses in Chemical Sciences, seminars), as well as lectures in Master’s programs, TFA courses, PAS courses, advanced training courses for graduates (programs aimed at strengthening employability of young graduates in the regional public administration – Regional Operational Programme P.O. FSE 2014/2020 Sicily Region), and IFTS courses.
Research activity has been carried out in collaboration with numerous research groups from other Italian and foreign universities, as well as several CNR institutes and multinational companies (Procter & Gamble Ltd; Bozzetto Giovanni S.p.A., Italy), and environmental investigation firms and analytical laboratories.
His research activity has focused on the following main topics (a more detailed description is provided in Appendix A):
1. Speciation of highly charged electrolytes: acid-base properties and complexing capacities towards inorganic and organic cations and various classes of organic ligands.
2. Modelling of the separation of linear and substituted amines by HPLC.
3. Speciation and sequestration studies of UO2²⁺ in different ionic media (NaCl, NaNO3, Synthetic Seawater, etc.), interaction with various classes of low molecular weight ligands and formation of mixed species.
4. Determination of solubilities and activity coefficients of classes of organic ligands in various ionic media.
5. Determination of thermodynamic parameters of specific ionic interactions of various classes of ligands in solutions containing different supporting electrolytes at various ionic strengths and temperatures.
6. Synthesis, characterization and speciation studies of 3-hydroxy-4-pyridinone derivatives and interactions with metals of environmental and biological interest.
7. Thermodynamic studies on the Sn²⁺ ion, interactions with various classes of ligands under conditions simulating natural waters and biological fluids.
Prof. Francesco Crea has been/is affiliated with: - From 2002 to 2023 to the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in Chemistry at the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences of the University of Messina. - Academic year 2013–2014 also affiliated with the Master’s degree in Territorial Risk Management (GERIT) – LM-75 “Environmental and Territorial Sciences and Technologies”. - Academic year 2022–2023 also affiliated with the degree program in Environmental Sustainability and Innovation (LM-27) at the same department. Supervisor of approximately 40 Bachelor’s and Master’s theses in Chemistry, 2 Master’s theses for the GERIT course and 1 for Environmental Sustainability and Innovation. Many theses were developed in collaboration with ARPA (Reggio Calabria, Siracusa) and environmental consulting firms and analytical laboratories.

Prof. Crea has been actively involved in the organization of national and international scientific events, serving as a member of the Organizing Committees of major conferences in analytical and environmental chemistry, including: the 4th European NECTAR Conference (Network for Equilibria and Chemical Thermodynamics Advanced Research) and the final meeting of the COST Action in 2024, the XXVI Congress of the Italian Chemical Society (Analytical Division, 2016), the XXII International Symposium on Metal Complexes (ISMEC 2011, where he also served as Secretary), and the Mediterranean Conference on Chemistry of Aquatic Systems (AQUACHEM04).
He has also played a significant role in advanced scientific training and international academic coordination as Vice-Director of the International Summer School “Tiziano Granata” in Forensic Geology and Environmental Crimes/Criminalistics, across multiple editions. Within this program, he has been a member of the International Technical-Scientific and Didactic Committee, together with leading experts from European and US institutions, contributing to scientific coordination, teaching activities, and overall organization of the event.

He was selected as a member of the National Scientific Qualification committee for the period 2023–2025 (Director’s Decree no. 2161 of 19.12.2023), serving as secretary of the evaluation committee.

PROFESSIONAL APPOINTMENTS IN ENVIRONMENTAL CONSULTING
i. 2018: Appointment as Technical Assistant to the Judicial Police for the Guardia di Finanza of Milazzo (ME) for criminal proceeding no. 4844/2017 R.G.N.R. of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Messina concerning leachate infiltration and contamination of areas surrounding a municipal solid waste landfill (within the framework of the agreement between UNIME and the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Messina).

iii. 2021: Appointment as technical consultant for the Bankruptcy Judge (CT) at the Court of Palmi (RC), for bankruptcy procedure R.F. 08/2020, for: “mapping, characterization and classification of all substances present inside and outside the facility, waste disposal methods, and estimation of the market value of recoverable materials”.
iv. 2021: Appointment as technical consultant within criminal proceeding no. 1678/20 of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Lamezia Terme, following the preventive seizure of the consortium wastewater treatment plant of Lamezia Terme managed by DECA srl, for chemical-physical and ecotoxicological analyses of influent waters, effluent discharge and sediments, and preparation of the technical report.

PARTICIPATION IN COMMITTEES AND INSTITUTIONAL APPOINTMENTS
Prof. Francesco Crea has actively participated in examination boards and graduation sessions for Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses in Chemistry, as well as for the GERIT degree course and the Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Sustainability and Innovation; furthermore:
• He was a member of the evaluation committee for a competition for a permanent university researcher position in the scientific disciplinary sector CHIM/01 at the Faculty of Pharmacy of the “La Sapienza” University of Rome (year 2007);
• He has repeatedly been a member of committees appointed by the doctoral board in Chemical Sciences for evaluating the teaching and research activity of PhD candidates of various cycles, for admission to subsequent years;
• He was a member of committees appointed by the doctoral board for evaluating third-year PhD students for admission to the final examination for the PhD degree (A.Y. 2011–2012; 2013–2014; 2014–2015);
• He was a member of the selection committee for admission to the PhD course in Chemical Sciences at the University of Messina (A.Y. 2011–2012);
• He was a member of the final examination committee for the PhD degree (XXVIII cycle) and for the Doctor Europaeus title in Chemical Sciences (A.Y. 2014–2015);
• He was a member for many years, until A.Y. 2020–2021, of the teaching committee of the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences of the University of Messina;
• He was a member of the joint teaching-student committee of the same department from 2016 to 2020;
• He was a member of the committee for the professional qualification examination (Chemist Junior, Chemist) for the 1st and 2nd sessions of 2020;
• He has frequently served as a member of committees for the renewal of research grants;
• He was a member of the evaluation committee for the appointment of Associate Professors (type B fixed-term researchers) in SSD CHIM/01: Analytical Chemistry (year 2020, prot. no. 127665 of 11.12.2020);
• Since October 2021, he has been a member of the joint committee of the Department of Chemical, Biological, Pharmaceutical and Environmental Sciences;
• He currently serves as Safety Officer for the ChiBioFarAm Department;
• He currently serves as Delegate for Sustainability for the ChiBioFarAm Department.

PARTICIPATION IN SCHOOLS
He participated in the III edition of the “International School on Marine Chemistry”, held in Ustica (PA, Italy) from September 9 to September 16, 2000.

Overview

The research of interst is mainly focused to the determination of formation thermodynamic parameters in multicomponent aqueous solutions. Particular attention is paid to the evaluation and modeling of the speciation of ligands and cations of biological, technological, and environmental interest in different conditions. His research covers mainly the following topics: • Speciation analysis of multicomponent aqueous solutions; • Chemical thermodynamics; • Coordination chemistry; • Metal and ligand interactions with the main components of natural waters and biological fluids; • Determination of thermodynamic parameters (e.g., stability constants, activity coefficients, enthalpy changes, solubility products, etc.); • Dependence of speciation and thermodynamic parameters on system conditions (e.g., ionic strength, ionic medium, pH, temperature, mixtures, etc.); • Sequestration/remediation studies; • Aquatic Geochemistry; • Speciation and interaction models for real systems of biological, environmental and technological/industrial interest; • Chemical modeling.
