Assessment Methods

Documentary evaluation of logbooks and medical records, possible repetition of skills. Assessment of suitability following a verification by a commission in charge made up of teachers responsible for teaching and according to a specific calendar. The review can be structured as an Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), as far as applicable.

Contents

Communication and behaviour (3 h) Communicate effectively with a different audience (owner, veterinary colleagues or other figures) Prepare clear and accurate reports for different purposes (certificates and reports, academic / scientific articles) Communicate and work as a team Manage conflict situations through the negotiation Communicate health and safety risks to people Record, archive and retrieve information using computer systems Provide information in a way that enables owner to make informed decisions Ensure that personal attitudes and behaviors are aligned with the moral and ethical code Application of good clinical practices in consideration of animal welfare Handling and containment for clinical examinations and diagnostic procedures (3 h) Evaluation of the nature of the animal Animal approach, handling and restraint Select and wear protective clothing to protect yourself and others from injury Clinical examination (20 h) First aid – Triage Reporting and anamnesis Measurement of vital functions: temperature, pulse and respiratory rate Body condition score Recognition of clinical signs associated with the main cardiorespiratory, digestible, urinary, endocrine, neurological diseas es Clinical examination of the lymphatic system Clinical examination of the cardiovascular system Clinical examination of the respiratory system Clinical examination of the skin Clinical examination of the digestive system and abdominal organs Clinical examination of urinary system Neurological exam Obtaining and managing samples useful for diagnosis (4 h) Obtaining and managing venous blood samples Obtaining and managing urine samples Obtaining and managing of other biological fluid Obtaining and managing skin samples Obtaining and managing lymph nodes samples Obtaining and managing mucous and cutaneous swabs Selection of the suitable tube for the sample Appropriate transport methods for different biological samples Use of laboratory equipment and execution of standard tests (6 h) Perform standard blood tests (blood smear, cell blood count, biochemical tests and POC diagnostics) Perform standard urine tests Evaluate the results of internal laboratory tests (hematology, biochemistry, urinalysis, skin microbiology, faeces, virology, body fluids) Use of diagnostic imaging equipment (6 h) Place the animal and the area of interest to obtain a diagnostic X-ray Prepare and use radiographic imaging equipment Observe radiographic practice safely Interpretation of x-ray images Ultrasound examination Configure the ECG machine and get the reading Use indirect blood pressure readings Appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic approach (10 h) Administer drugs (oral, topical, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, endorectal, intraperitoneal, intraosseous) Critical care Select the dosage, times and frequency Select and prescribe drugs according to the needs of the individual case (using dictionaries, if necessary) Prescribing drugs in accordance with legislative requirements Store medications in accordance with special requirements Calculate therapeutic dosages Euthanasia (2 h) Administer intravenous euthanasia drugs Dispose of dead bodies properly
