La prostituzione femminile nella tarda antichità. Un caso singolare a Siracusa

Nel contributo si esamina l’epistola 14 di papa Onorio al vescovo siracusano Pietro, scritta nel 630, le cui informazioni possono rivelarsi particolarmente utili per meglio comprendere le risoluzioni assunte nei confronti del prossenitismo e della prostituzione nel mondo tardoantico e bizantino. Nella lettera in questione, il papa lamenta che il vescovo siracusano avrebbe sostenuto la richiesta di più di trecento prostitute, che si erano con lui recate dal prefetto per chiedere la destituzione del curator che era stato loro assegnato in precedenza. Non vi sono in letteratura altre testimonianze relative ad un curator meretricum, né sono noti postriboli gestiti dallo stato nella tarda antichità e nel mondo bizantino. Lo studio del documento è propedeutico ad una riflessione più ampia sul ruolo e sulle funzioni del vescovo nelle realtà cittadine della Sicilia bizantina e sul recepimento della legislazione giustinianea contro il lenocinio e lo sfruttamento delle prostitute.
This paper examines Pope Honorius' Epistle 14 to the Bishop of Syracuse Peter, written in
630, whose information may prove particularly useful in better understanding the
resolutions adopted towards proxenitism and prostitution in the late antique and Byzantine
world. In this letter, the pope complains that the Syracusan bishop allegedly supported the
request for more than three hundred harlots, who had gone with him to the prefect to ask
for the dismissal of the curator who had been assigned to them previously. There are no
other accounts of a curator meretricum in the literature, nor are there known brothels
managed by the state in late antiquity and in the byzantine world. The study of the
document is preparatory to a wider reflection on the role and functions of the bishop in the
cities of Byzantine Sicily and on the transposition of Justinian legislation to repress the
phenomen of panderism (lenocinium) and the exploitation of prostitutes.
