Comparison of EC broth and 2% Brilliant Green Bile Broth

The efficacy of two culture media, EC broth and 2% Brilliant Green Bile broth, were compared for the determination of total and fecal coliforms in foods. The total coliform results were: superposition (26.92%), greater specificity of EC (46.16%), greater specificity of 2% Brilliant Green Bile broth (26.92%). Regarding fecal coliforms, results were: superposition (57.69%), greater specificity of EC (28.85%), greater specificity of 2% Brilliant Green Bile broth (13.46%). The results confirm the greater specificity of EC broth for the determination of total and fecal coliforms in food.
